Minister for the Environment on fact-finding visit at Swiss Steel Group in Lucerne

Lucerne, 6 May 2022 – The Swiss Steel Group, one of the world’s leading providers of special long steel, hosted Grace Fu, Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment at their plant in Emmenbrücke, Swisstec AG. The focus of the visit was the exchange of information about energy management and sustainable steel production.

Singapore is one of world’s the most sustainable countries worldwide. The country attaches the greatest importance to always staying up to date on the newest developments which prompted the visit to the Swiss Steel Group. The Group leads the field in the area of low carbon emissions in steel production and currently continues to expand their Green Steel portfolio.

To discuss progress in the area of climate protection, Grace Fu, the Minister for Sustainability and the Environment for the Republic of Singapore, came to Europe from May 4 to 6, 2022 to take part in symposia and meetings in several countries, including Switzerland. On Friday, the Swiss Steel Group also had the great honor to welcome Grace Fu to the Steeltec AG production site in Emmenbrücke. The delegation spent the afternoon talking about sustainable steel production at the Swiss Steel Group with Florian Geiger, CEO of Steeltec AG and member of the Swiss Steel Group executive board, Torsten Niemann, Vice President Corporate Strategy for the Swiss Steel Group, and Anina Berger, Vice President Marketing and Communications for the Swiss Steel Group.

The continuing reduction in energy consumption is one of the topics the government is pursuing. Minister Fu learned firsthand about the ever more efficient energy use of the Swiss Steel Group and their Green Steel which is produced in the electric arc furnace with low CO2 emissions using power from 100% regenerative energy sources and recycled scrap. A segment in which Swiss Steel is increasingly taking a leading position. In the meantime, Green Steel is produced both in plants in Switzerland and Germany as well as in France to different specifications and is ever more in demand.

“We will continue to work hard on consolidating our already encouragingly good position in the Green Steel segment because sustainability to us is not just a question of business, but also a basic attitude as a company towards our responsibility to society,” says Frank Koch, CEO of Swiss Steel Holding AG during an employee event.

To learn more about producing steel in electric furnaces and the use of an electric arc furnace run exclusively on electricity produced from regenerative energies, Grace Fu and the delegation concluded their visit with a tour of the plant operated by Steeltec AG, the special bright steel producer of the Swiss Steel Group.
