Ambassador of the USA Scott Miller and President of the Government Fabian Peter learn about sustainable steel production at Swiss Steel Group in Emmenbrücke

Emmenbrücke, 30.08.2023. Swiss Steel Group received a high-ranking delegation consisting of the US Ambassador to Switzerland, Scott Miller, and the President of the Government of the Canton of Lucerne, Fabian Peter, for a plant visit in Emmenbrücke. The meeting focused on sustainable steel production, current challenges and the important training of apprentices.

The open discussions paid particular attention to the current high energy prices, upcoming decarbonization tasks and the importance of barrier-free access to international markets. During the subsequent tour of the electric steel plant of Swiss Steel Group subsidiary, Steeltec AG, Ambassador Scott Miller showed particular interest in the apprenticeships and took the opportunity to meet apprentices in person.

The visit to the electric arc furnace, where the steel scrap is melted down, proved to be a particular highlight. The imposing forces of this process not only impressed the participants, but also provided the talking point for the discussion about the Swiss Steel Group's goals: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2038. Thanks to the use of recycled scrap and 100 percent renewable electricity, the company already has a carbon footprint that is more than 90 percent below the global average for steel producers. Frank Koch commented: "The visit by Ambassador Scott Miller and President of the Swiss Government Fabian Peter underlines the outstanding importance of sustainable steel production in Switzerland as a driver for an efficient circular economy."
